I make operas. Combining the elements of drawing, Xerox transfers,
and found book pages, I craft narratives bursting with drama and
action, as psychologically powerful as they are aesthetically spare.
The stories unfold intuitively, page by page, as characters emerge,
fantastical in their context and physicality. Some take on the
plumage of birds; others find themselves navigating outer space.
All of them explore the complex, often doomed dynamics present
when creatures search for meaning and connection with one another.
I create
one-of-a-kind objects using a modern, reproducible process. From
my original drawings I make Xerox transfers on found vintage book
pages, singular and fragile canvases, each one unique. In this
way I employ the visual language of comic and pop art to craft
a delicate, irreplaceable art piece. My work references both the
enjoyment of modern reproducible imagery and our contemporary hunger
for inimitable output.
Though not necessarily autobiographical, each opera emerges from
and reflects my hidden truths culled from an internal place beyond
the verbal. Their melancholy speaks to parts of the self unknowable.
